Saturday night, Ryan and I saw Cinderella, the new movie version directed by Kenneth Branagh. It was either that or Get Hard, and Ryan let me pick, so Cinderella it was. I’ve always loved the fairy tale, and I was excited to see this version with both Lily James and Sophie McShera from “Downton Abbey,” as well as Richard Madden, formerly of “Game of Thrones,” as the prince. (It’s not like Robb Stark was busy or anything, poor guy.)

The movie is a basic re-telling of the classic story, and it never strays from its simple plot. The set and the costumes are lovely, and I really enjoyed the outfits worn by Cinderella’s stepmother and stepsisters. Here’s an interesting Vogue article about the costume designer, Sandy Powell, who used a 1940s and 50s theme to dress the characters in their over-the-top pieces.

The scenes at the royal ball are especially beautiful, and the movie stays true to the original fairy tale. It’s a sweet story that’s safe for children to watch, and it was fun to enjoy a pretty film with a guaranteed happy ending.
