“Bomb Girls”
I’m in the middle of this season’s “Call the Midwife” and just finished “The Bletchley Circle,” so it’s fitting that I recently discovered “Bomb Girls,” a Canadian show now on Netflix. Set mostly in and around a Toronto munitions factory during World War II, “Bomb Girls” tells the stories of the women on the Canadian home front and profiles their daily lives during the war.
With apologies to my Canadian friends, I wasn’t familiar with my neighboring country’s war efforts, so hopefully I’m learning quite a bit. Though the show is definitely a drama aimed at young women, it still depicts the struggles felt by everyone during the 1940s, with lots of vintage fashion and wonderful music thrown in for good measure.
The fashion alone is enough to capture my attention, and the pieces worn by the girls look incredibly accurate and lovely, at the same time. After watching the show, I’m reaching for my red lipstick and frillier, vintage-inspired blouses.
Sadly, the show has not been renewed for a third season, and viewers across the world are in an uproar over it. There’s an actual Save Bomb Girls movement, complete with two petitions to sign, in the hopes of persuading the network executives to change their minds.
If you have Netflix, I highly recommend “Bomb Girls,” and if you agree, please sign the petitions, too.
Interesting to learn about Bomb Girls. My mother-in-law was really sweet and gave us a Netflix subscription. I’ve seen Bomb Girls pop up, but was avoiding it. I tend to be a TV junkie (good thing we don’t have TV)! and get hooked on shows – even if they’re not worth watching. It sounds like I might learn something from Bomb Girls, though. Thanks for the info!
I really loved it and will have to watch it again! I can also recommend “Land Girls” and “Call the Midwife.” 🙂
