This week really flew by after our busy Easter weekend. I started photographing items for my shop, which proved to be more complicated than anticipated, but things are falling into place. This weekend, I’m looking forward to a bit more work and some relaxation, too. Here are a few things that caught my eye this week.
The lovely Anna from The Flying Clubhouse has opened a shop for her gorgeous photos.
Members of Ebenezer Baptist Church in their Easter finery.
The story of “Gertie’s Babies,” who were sold at birth in the middle part of the 20th century.
A glimpse inside the deception of pregnancy crisis centers.
Texas DREAMers testified before the state legislature this week.
A New Orleans teacher with an inspiring plan for his students.
How Flo from Progressive got her job. A really fascinating read.
And the trailer for season 3 of “Orange in the New Black.” I can’t wait!
Have a great weekend!

I was on the hunt recently for a denim skirt (the soft, worn-in kind that would be perfect for summer) and I found Brown Bag Plus, run by Michelle Delgado on Etsy. The store, along with its sister site, Brown Bag Vintage, features beautiful models in a wide range of sizes and shapes, which really helps when you are shopping for vintage clothing. Brown Bag Plus opened last month and has received great feedback for its realistic photos of the merchandise, all of which are size 12 and up.
Anyone who shops for vintage clothing online knows that sizing can be tricky, since vintage pieces tend to run smaller than current sizes. By using real models, Michelle alleviates the confusion and curates beautiful pieces that work well with the things in your closet. I’m thrilled with my new skirt and love perusing the frequently added pieces at both Brown Bag Vintage and Brown Bag Plus.
Michelle has graciously offered my readers 15% off a purchase at either store with the code EATCAKE, so be sure to visit Brown Bag Plus and Brown Bag Vintage! Let me know if you find anything you love.

Saturday night, Ryan and I saw Cinderella, the new movie version directed by Kenneth Branagh. It was either that or Get Hard, and Ryan let me pick, so Cinderella it was. I’ve always loved the fairy tale, and I was excited to see this version with both Lily James and Sophie McShera from “Downton Abbey,” as well as Richard Madden, formerly of “Game of Thrones,” as the prince. (It’s not like Robb Stark was busy or anything, poor guy.)

(Cinderella’s stepmother and stepsisters, via Disney Wiki.)
The movie is a basic re-telling of the classic story, and it never strays from its simple plot. The set and the costumes are lovely, and I really enjoyed the outfits worn by Cinderella’s stepmother and stepsisters. Here’s an interesting Vogue article about the costume designer, Sandy Powell, who used a 1940s and 50s theme to dress the characters in their over-the-top pieces.

(Cinderella at the ball, via Disney Wiki.)
The scenes at the royal ball are especially beautiful, and the movie stays true to the original fairy tale. It’s a sweet story that’s safe for children to watch, and it was fun to enjoy a pretty film with a guaranteed happy ending.
